Brick and stone veneer systems can dramatically transform a home's exterior — but the installation system behind the face material determines whether it lasts 30 years or 5.
Brick and stone veneer systems are one of the most popular exterior renovation options in Chicagoland, and for good reason — they can transform a dated home exterior with materials that genuinely perform. The challenge is that the installation system matters far more than the face material, and most homeowners have no way to evaluate it from a product brochure or a contractor's estimate.
Full-bed brick veneer (the same thickness as structural brick) performs reliably in Illinois's freeze-thaw climate when installed with proper wall ties, a continuous moisture barrier, and weep holes at the base course. Thin brick and manufactured stone veneers, installed correctly over a stucco scratch coat and metal lath system, can also perform well — but the installation tolerance for error is much smaller, and the consequences of shortcuts are much faster to appear.
At AMS, our veneer installation process begins with the existing wall substrate. We assess moisture infiltration, check for existing wall damage, and specify a system that addresses drainage before covering anything. The waterproofing beneath the veneer is the investment that protects the investment in the veneer itself. We have repaired too many veneer systems installed by contractors who skipped this step.
Veneer transformations we have completed across Hinsdale, Elmhurst, Naperville, and Chicago range from full-facade replacements to accent wall installations on commercial storefronts. If you are exploring veneer options for your home or building, contact us for a site visit — we will assess the existing wall condition, recommend appropriate materials for your climate exposure, and provide a written scope of work before any decisions are made.
